DAAD-RISE opportunity
DAAD-RISE project outline and responsibilities
The main objective of the project will be to investigate the autecology of toads using an existing dataset for a global analysis and a local example of an invasive species. The student will determine which taxonomic and functional groups of invertebrates are preyed upon by the guttural toad in Cape Town. Moreover, the student will also investigate whether this species has functionally shifted its dietary preferences once in the new environment. He/she will analyse the stomach contents of individual toads collected in Cape Town and Durban using microscope and taxonomic keys. In addition, the candidate will put the findings into a global context with extensive literature already collected by the MeaseyLab for previous analyses (Measey et al. 2015). Lastly the student will assist in morphological data collection on the invasive toads.
